Bail raised to $1 million for woman accused in Elder teacher hit-skip

The woman accused of striking an Elder teacher with her car is being held on $1 million bail.

Kayla Wilson, 23, was arrested Dec. 12, Cincinnati police said, in connection to a Dec. 9 crash near Warsaw and Wilder avenues in East Price Hill.

Mark Klusman, 74, an Elder High School teacher, was hit as he was doing volunteer work.

Wilson is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular assault and leaving the scene of a crash, but officials said that her charges could be amended after Klusman died earlier this week. Her bail was set at $1 million when she appeared in court Friday.

Wilson was also assigned a public defender Friday. The judge said that her attorney had not appeared with her in court twice in a row and removed him from her case.

Klusman and other volunteers from Elder were cleaning up leaves and debris on the road along Warsaw Avenue.

Cincinnati police said that Wilson was traveling at an excessive speed and was under the influence of marijuana when the crash happened.

Wilson is expected to appear in court again Jan. 9.
