Man who claimed he was shot in road rage incident charged with killing Norfolk pre-K teacher

A 70-year-old Utah man has been charged with murder in the shooting death on New Years Eve of an Oceanair Elementary School teacher.

Edward A. Shaw, of Sevier, Utah, is charged with one count of second degree murder and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

The charges stem from the death of 50-year-old Caroline M. Hendrix.

According to a news release, police determined Shaw fatally shot Hendrix around 8 p.m. During the incident, Shaw was shot by an acquaintance of Hendrix who was attempting to come to her aid.

About an hour later, Chesapeake police located Shaw in his vehicle, while it was parked in the 600 block of Happy Acres Road. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Shaw initially told police he was shot while stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 64, near the Deep Creek exit. He portrayed it as a road rage incident.

The State Police investigated the claim, but found no evidence to support it.

Shaw is currently a patient at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Upon his release, he will be transported to Norfolk City Jail.
