Ex-teacher who admitted to sex with student may avoid jail

A disgraced former high school teacher may face no jail time for having a sexual relationship with a student.

According to the East Bay Times, Corine Audiat, who pleaded no contest to having unlawful sex with an underage student, struck a deal with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office in December.

The deal required that she plead no contest to two felony charges in exchange for the dismissal of five additional charges, court records obtained by the outlet revealed.

Audiat, 32, will be placed on probation and could face other penalties as a result of her admission of guilt, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Teresa Drenick said.

The former Washington High School teacher was arrested near the end of 2016.

The East Bay Times reported that in the plea deal, which was announced on Dec. 19, Audiat did not deny charges of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor or oral copulation of a person under 18. Both charges are felonies.

Four other felony charges, which included three counts of contacting a minor for sex and one count of sending harmful material to a minor with sexual intent, as well as a misdemeanor child molestation charge were dropped.

Sentencing for Audiat has been set for Feb. 9.

As part of her plea deal, there is a chance the former teacher could serve 180 days in county jail. The judge could, however, allow her to serve that time outside of jail with an electronic monitoring device.

Audiat is also facing three to five years of probation and will have to register as a sex offender in California and give up her teaching credential.

According to the East Bay Times, she’ll be expected to complete 150 hours of community service, turn in DNA samples to law enforcement officials, avoid her victim for 10 years and complete a full year of sex offender counseling, per the details of the plea deal.

Audiat will be barred from any unsupervised contact with minors during her probationary period. She could face “fees, fines and restitution as determined by the judge,” according to Drenick.

In addition to teaching physical education at Washington High School, Audiat taught at the Fremont Unified School District and was a swim coach at Mission San Jose High School and for an East Bay Swim League team in Fremont.

Police began investigating her in November 2016 after receiving a tip that she and a male student had been intimate.

Audiat was arrested on Thanksgiving day of that year and charged with two felonies.

She was released after posting $130,000 bail.

Additional charges were filed by the District Attorney’s Office days later. She turned herself in the following day and was released after posting $230,000 bail.
